The Girls of 2011: No. 7

Chloe Moretz

It seems more and more teen actresses are skipping the Disney Channel shows and going straight for the serious acting gigs, and good for them! You have to wonder if you would like Hilary Duff or even Kristen Stewart if they had started off in more serious works. Fourteen-year-old Chloe Moretz here is one of a handful of young starlets who skipped all the teeny-bopper stuff in favor of the silver screen. Chloe first became known for the 2010 movie Kick-Ass, then as the vampire child in Let Me In, then as the sassy little sister in (500) Days of Summer. This winter Chloe stars as the granddaughter of a theatre owner in Hugo. Clearly this girl is going places. But her style is to be admired as well. Where most teens struggle to balance between childish and sexy, Chloe has found the perfect medium. She's cute but youthful, and that's something that I personally admire.

Amber Heard

Ever since Megan Fox told everyone she was apparently married I feel we have all been looking for the next bombshell, but no need to fear, for Amber Heard has answered all our calls! Who else could play the role of playboy bunny in the new TV show The Playboy Club? And, dare I say it, I prefer her to Megan Fox and Angelina Jolie. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems Amber has a bit more fun than the other sultry actresses out there. She laughs and smiles and is just all around cuter. Or maybe I'm just biased because she's blonde. Amber always accentuates her good looks in form-fitting, low-sweeping gowns with the occasional thigh-high slit. Maybe it's just me, but I feel she could very well be the Marilyn Monroe of our generation.

Elizabeth Olsen

It can be very difficult to make it as the relative of someone who is already famous, mostly because people either worship you or disregard you due to your famous family name. Maybe you get credit you don't deserve simply because your sister is a talented actress, or, vice versa, you don't get the credit you do deserve because people question if you have the same talents as your sister. So I've got to give Elizabeth Olsen credit for breaking out on her own. The younger sister of twins Mary-Kate and Ashley, Elizabeth shares in her sisters' love of clothing. A bit less bohemian than her famous twin siblings, yes, but the young actress has got every bit as much red carpet appeal. And apparently she's not too shabby on the silver screen, either. She's gotten plenty of stellar reviews for her role as the titular character in this year's Martha Marcy May Marlene and is set to star in two more movies this upcoming year. Something tells me this Olsen girl would have made it in movies regardless of her relations.

The End of the Year is Near

Sorry for being MIA lately. My family and I took a much needed vacation over Thanksgiving break and now I feel all relaxed and rejuvenated. I have submitted 3 out of 6 college applications (!!!) and my stress has seemed to vanish over this past week.

But alas, I am back, and now it is crunch time. My favorite time of the year is finally here, and I have a ton of fabulous treats prepared for you guys (keep checking back for some extremely chic holiday gift guides).

2011 is almost over, and like everyone else, I like to do a recap of my favorite style moments. If you look in the archives of The Fashion Barbie, you'll see the Top Ten Girls of 2010, with Blake Lively taking the crown as last year's It Girl. But the crown is entirely up for grabs this year, so if you feel someone deserves the title of It Girl of 2011, leave a comment! And expect the first installment of the countdown once December rolls around.

Backless gowns are all the rage these days, and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley reigns supreme as the current backless princess. They really are prefect for making a head-turning statement, though- from the front, these hip-skimming gowns look like your average couture evening dress, but turn around and BAM! Vertebrae out for everyone to see! It's seductive without being too provocative, and these backless dresses are a sure way to land on best-dressed lists. Let's take a look at some of the most stunning backless beauties:

Victoria's Secret Angel and Transformers hottie Rosie Huntington-Whiteley wears her backless dresses with a coy attitude.

Blake Lively is never one to give up an opportunity to show some skin. Legs, chest, arms...and now, back!

Kate Hudson, Emma Stone, and Anne Hathaway all bare their backs on the red carpet.

Want to show some backbone? These dresses are total statement-makers.

And finally...

I've put this off long enough...

the girl that I feel has best embodied the past year...

Blake Lively!

It's no secret that I adore Blake Lively. She is one of my celebrity role models, and basically I think she's fabulous. So I may be biased when picking her as the girl of 2010, but I think a lot of other people might agree with that statement. Why don't you ask, oh, Karl Lagerfeld? Yes, Blake has become one of the Chanel it girls, and in the spring she's going to be the new spokesmodel for the brand's Mademoiselle line. Or how about Anna Wintour, editor-in-chief of Vogue? Blake has also managed to become one of Anna's besties.
But why have two of the most prominent names in fashion befriended our girl, Blake? She's got impeccable style, she's fresh and fun, and she's basically everywhere right now. Blake really has that star quality- everything she touches turns to gold.

Emma Watson

Emma Watson is a woman of many talents: for ten years she's dazzled the silver screen as brainy, frizzy-haired wizard Hermione Granger, she's a sophomore at Brown University, an Ivy League school, and she's managed to become one of the fashion world's favorite celebrities. For twenty, I'd say she's accomplished a lot. This summer will mark the end of the eight Harry Potter films, but I do hope that Emma continues to make movies or maybe just appearances. For a girl who's grown up with the Harry Potter books and movies, I'd say she's my biggest celebrity role model. She's gorgeous, she's smart, she's stylish; and more important than any of that, she seems to be pretty grounded for one of the highest-paid teenagers around. Really, I wish there were more Emma Watsons in the world.

Carey Mulligan

She gained momentum last year with her critically-acclaimed role in An Education, but 2010 was the real crunch time for Carey Mulligan. This year, Carey made appearances in two highly-anticipated movies: Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps was a sequel to the popular 1987 movie where she starred along side Shia LaBeuouf and Michael Douglas; and Never Let Me Go, the movie adaptation of the famed novel. But what stunned us even more than her magnificent acting was her clothing. Carey never fails to appear poised and pretty. She really does have star style, something that most celebrities are disregarding nowadays.

Natalie Portman

She's everywhere right now, I feel like, what with her critically-acclaimed performance in Black Swan and her new gig with Dior. Natalie owned the red carpet this year with sweet and elegant frocks that channeled the costume of a beautiful ballet show, but still with a flirty attitude. We'll be seeing a lot more of Natalie this year in awards season, and I really hope she continues to wow us with her fantastic choices in clothes.
