And they're off!

Prada brought me back to the drag race scene at the end of Grease, but the season's girl was more of a Sandy sitting on the sidelines than Cha Cha waving her scarf. The looks were sweet and ladylike but standing on the edge of a cliff. Models wore coats that amlost covered their bared midriffs. A sleek, modest blouse and skirt combo came in leather. Candy colored skirts were dipped in fiery flames.

Where Miuccia really killed it, though, was in the to-die-for accessories: shoes with leather cut-out flames on the heels; oversized clutches with cartoon cars; rosette earrings dripping with jewels. As always Prada will be an editor favorite, and I really enjoy that both young and old fashionaphiles alike will be able to rock this collection.

Atomic Girl

I've been a longtime loyal reader of KRISATOMIC and so I was so excited to see her coverage of London Fashion Week. She's a really talented artist and photographer and her eye for beautiful images never ceases to amaze me. She really captures the mood, too, and I hope she continues to cover shows and the street style scene because she takes the most amazing pictures.

The Best in NY

| comments

Can you believe New York Fashion Week has already come and gone? As usual there were some happy surprises and some over-hyped letdowns, so here's my recap of the best, the worst, and the all-out-wacky.

And, because I'm watching the Emmy's, this shall be done in the form of awards. Yay!

The Coolest Girl in Town- Karen Walker
I've developed a big crush on Karen Walker's clothes. Every season I'm in awe of how cool they are. And I know, most people think leather jackets and pixie hair cuts when they think of cool, but I'm never going to have that much street cred. So thank you, Karen Walker, for bringing me a happy medium of kitschy prints and masculine cuts (and plenty of turban headbands!) and giving me, the girliest of girls, the chance to be, dare I say, cool.

Most Likely to Succeed on the Red Carpet- Marchesa
The Marchesa team is no stranger to the Red Carpet, but I think everyone will agree that each season the brand gets it right. They had some big expectations to live up to with their first runway show, but I think it's safe to say that they delivered. Georgina Chapman & Co. took advantage of their runway and showcased fabric that moves. The flapper-esque fringe dresses are sure to be a hit this awards season.

Most (Pleasantly) Surprising- Reed Krakoff
I know people have been raving about Reed Krakoff since his first show in 2010, but I've only just jumped on the bandwagon after seeing his spring presentation. The colors are quirky yet pleasing, the cuts minimal but incredibly flattering. I'm not the biggest proponent in minimalism, but Reed makes me a little more open to the idea that less really is more.

Most Likely to Fly Off the Shelves- Milly
As fun as couture gowns are, they just aren't all that practical. Sometimes it's nice to see clothes that are in a decent price range and can actually be worn. Enter Milly. For spring Michelle Smith focused on geometric prints and traditionally autumnal hues (pumpkin oranges and royal blues) and the product was a collection that I could see all sorts of women wearing, myself included. I'm already anxious for spring to come so I can pick up some Milly!

Best in Show- Prabal Gurung
I've been following Prabal Gurung for a while now and I'm so glad to see such success. With a CFDA Vogue Fashion Fund Award, a collaboration with J. Crew, and the hearts of Sarah Jessica Parker and Michelle Obama alike, it's certainly been a good year thus far for Prabal Gurung. Well, he can add the best show of New York to his list of positives. Every look was just so well done and interesting, something we don't see too often these days. I hope the rest of the world agrees that this is the show to beat.

For the Mulleavy sisters' spring collection it seems they had impressionism on the brain. I think artist's prints can be a little tricky on clothing- you don't want to make them too gimmicky. Just doing the straight up painting (see Look 32) doesn't look as good as subtly suggesting a stroke or piece to a painting. With the exception of Look 32, I think the sisters did a good job of bringing more the escence of a Van Gogh painting rather than the actual painting.

Look 34 was how the first "Starry Night" dress should have been done, with the same rich blues and glorious swirls as the painting but without looking like they just copied and pasted the image onto some silky fabric. I guess what I'm trying to say is I want to see inspiration, not replication.

But no matter. Some nuances aside, I thoroughly enjoyed the collection (especially since I got to check it out using Style.com's live photowall in art class today) and was pleased to see one of my favorite tragic artists inspiring some of my favorite designers around.

The Cold Shoulder

| comments

Every season I feel like there is always a featured body part. Sometimes it's the legs. Other times it's the waist. But for Spring 2012, it is definitely the season of the shoulder.

From halters to cut outs, it's time to take off that sweater and flaunt your clavicles!

Halters
Christian Cota; Suno; Erin Featherson; Yigal Azrouel

Off the Shoulder
Farah Angsana; Luca Luca; Monique Lhuillier; Vena Cava

Cut Out
Richard Chai Love; Rebecca Taylor; Luca Luca; BCBG Max Azria

One Shoulder
Band of Outsiders; BCBG Max Azria; Helmut Lang; Costello Tagliapietra

Thrills and Frills

Spring 2012 Fashion Week has officially kicked off and already I'm seeing some wonderful creations! I think Peter Som's show has stood out the most of today's shows. With bright hues, graphic prints, and sleek cuts, the collection has a lot of star appeal. My favorite looks, however, are the fringe skirts. Get your scarlet macaw on with these feathery frocks.

Fashion's Night Out: San Diego

| comments

Haha just kidding! It was dark in San Diego last night and if there were any FNO celebrations scheduled for SD they were definitely put on hold. But hey! It's officially Fashion Week! We should be celebrating! (Plus, the lights are back on)

So in honor of our dark night, here's some mysterious fall looks you can try on when attending your fashion week festivities.

Alexander Wang; Chanel; Christopher Kane

One bright side to the power outage: there were so many stars in the sky!
