working overtime

Summer equals endless amounts of free time, and I plan to use each and every minute of the approximately 68 days I have left until move-in day wisely. As nice as vegging out is for a day or two, I get upset if I go too long without productivity. And my, what a productive first full week of summer it has been!

Above, the unfinished bodice to my newest project, the Sally dress. I found this fabric a while back in LA and I love the nautical stripes with flamingo pink. The original plan for this dress was to have a double-breasted design -you might notice in the above picture that one side of the bodice actually overlaps the other- but the row of buttons down the middle looked so perfect that I decided to go in that direction. Funny how things change from illustration to pattern to sewn piece.

Below, the finished result. Gathered skirt with a one-inch band at the bottom to give the skirt some more weight. I went with three buttons -even numbers are always nice! Now all I need to do is sew on the zipper and I'll have a brand new summer frock!

What productive -or not productive- things have you done this summer?

Land of the Golden Sun

This weekend was my brother's college graduation and it was absolutely beautiful in Santa Monica and Malibu. I finally got to see the Santa Monica Pier and bought an awesome Marc by Marc Jacobs dress for prom! But seriously, major beach traffic aside, I would love to live in Santa Monica one day. Everything there is so lovely.

Mint and Rose

In a fit of inspiration (and as a way of procrastinating on calculus homework) I redid the bulletin board in my room. I'm really digging mint and rose as a color combo, with some browns, silvers, and purples thrown in there for good measure. Tulle skirts, macarons, and jeweled headbands are all I can think about lately!

We Built This City

On this perfect summer Sunday two of my friends and I went to the U.S. Open Sandcastle Competition in Imperial Beach and it was a perfect way to spend the day! The sand sculptures are really quite impressive, vendors and fun interactive booths lined the streets, and fair-worthy food filled the air with sweet aromas. While my camera is still in the shop (which is why I haven't been uploading any personal style shots, though I promise my style is chic as always) I've been using my Instagram app to take snapshots. The Kate Spade tumblr keeps on uploading instagram pics and I must admit it is a quick and easy way to turn drab photos into cool, vintage-looking shots.
