living a teenage dream

| comments

The Teen Choice Awards were held yesterday and because I myself am a teenager and frankly because some of these outfits are downright hilarious, I am going to do the rundown of the best -and worst- of the night. My advice to most of these girls: if I were a teen starlet with dozens of designer frocks to choose from, well, I'd be picking better looks. Just sayin'

Nina Dobrev is perhaps the best-dressed of the teen set. She wowed in this ocean-hued asymmetrical dress and kept the hair and makeup simple. The dress speaks for itself and she looks positively glowing. Nina, you should hold a seminar on how to dress when you are young and famous.

Lea Michele looks great in this Versace dress. While it is maybe a bit too clubby for the venue, I think it beats some of her more dramatic get-ups. More than anything she looks like she's having fun, and I am a sucker for that metallic brocade. Lea also chose to keep the makeup to a minimum, which gives her a sun-kissed look that I love.

I don't know who Holland Roden is, but her Alice + Olivia dress is to-die-for! I love her hair, too.

On anyone else this look could have gone drastically wrong, but on Kat Graham it works. The vibrant print is awesome on her and she has the attitude to wear such a bold dress. I only wish she had worn sandals instead of pumps. I'm just not a fan of sky-high pumps.

I get it, Vanessa Marano, you're trying to be edgy. Unfortunately, those shoes are atrocious, and they are not doing anything for your legs. Calf-length boots are seldom flattering when your legs are more than an inch in diameter. Even ankle boots would have worked better, or maybe if she had worn a fit-and-flare dress. I do like the dress, though, and the eye-catching gold zipper.

My fellow Trojan Miranda Cosgrove looked great in a shimmering metallic dress (though again the shoes are just not cutting it for me). And is it just the lighting or is she trying out the ombre hair? Haven't we seen enough of that from celebrities?

Oh god, Demi Lovato, what are we going to do with you? I hate how musicians (if we can call Demi that) are all trying to out-crazy one another with the awful outfits, like they need to cover up for the fact that their music stinks. This dress is awful. It would look awful even on a model because it is ugly. I don't care if it is daring or wild, it is hideous and you should burn it. Your hair is stupid and my god, STOP BEING BLONDE! Does anyone remember how adorable Demi Lovato was when she first started out on Camp Rock? Go back to that, Demi. Go back to looking sweet and cute and normal because these awful outfits have me worrying for your sartorial health.

I love, love, LOVE this look! Chelsea Kane wore those fabulous Alice + Olivia shorts that I've been keeping tabs on and wore a simple ivory and cake batter top. She made the look pop with cobalt Louboutins (okay, the pumps work here) and kept her makeup natural. This is how people should dress.

Selena Gomez, another repeat offender of the ombre hair movement. Hair issues aside I love this look. The dress is so positively Barbie that I wish it was in my closet, and I love the white sandals. Selena may be short but she knows how to make her legs look miles long.

Victoria Justice rocked the mullet dress and I think it is perfect for her. My only advice would be drop the weird-looking belt. Is it bedazzled?

No, no, no, no, no! From the thumbnails I thought this was Jil Zarin! But no, it's Debby Ryan, who is probably only a year or two older than me, wearing a really unfortunate dress. Again, I get that these girls are attracted by something wild and eye-catching, but if it doesn't look good it ain't worth it! I hate the fit of it and the length. I just, ugh...

Aria on Pretty Little Liars is one of my favorite TV fashionistas, so thank goodness Lucy Hale is too! I love this sunburst dress with the cool but sleek neckline and her side braid! The gold accessories really work for me, too. Overall, a winning look, which is good, because Hale took home a coveted surfboard for Best Drama TV Actress!

Unfortunately, the same could not be said for Ashley Benson, also a Pretty Little Liar. The hair is okay but the outfit is, oh dear. It doesn't fit and it isn't flattering! Had the bustier gone into a twirl skirt it would have been alright, but she chose to pair it with horrible pants that make her look heavier than she really is! Once again a daring option, but girls, if it doesn't look good, it doesn't work! It's THAT SIMPLE.

I'd say Nina Dobrev took the title of best dressed, and Ashley Benson and Demi Lovato tied for worst dressed. Thank you, Niki Minaj, for pressuring celebrities into wearing tacky outfits for the hell of it. I blame you for Demi's disaster of a dress! Who did you think deserved the title of best dressed and who should have stayed home?

Style Crush: Emma Stone

| comments

Hot off freaking about Stone's latest silver-screen persona, I have turned to the woman behind Gwen Stacy and her exquisite red carpet style. The Amazing Spiderman tour has been long (they've been promoting this thing since April, it feels like!) but that has given dear Emma plenty of opportunities to knock our Wolford socks off with her red carpet choices! From sweet Chanel frocks to vampy Gucci goddess gowns, Emma Stone has proven that she is as sartorially inspirational as she is personality-wise. Honestly, the girl has got it all! Who knows, maybe she may win the title of It Girl for the second year in a row!

Style Crush: Elizabeth Banks

| comments

When The Hunger Games premiered in March, everyone was eagerly anticipating Jennifer Lawrence's rise to fashion fame- and rise she did. The star has stunned in Prabal Gurung, Marchesa, and Nina Ricci. But while the Lawrence certainly has lived up to her character's "girl on fire" reputation, the true star of the Hunger Games promotional tour turned out to be none other than Elizabeth Banks. Though not the star of the film by any means, Banks stole the spotlight from many of her younger counterparts both on and off screen. In the movie Banks portrays Effie Trinket, the District Twelve tribute escort and my personal favorite. It only seems fitting that Banks would mirror Trinket's whimsical, daring fashions on the red carpet while promoting the film.

But The Hunger Games has come and gone and still I'm noticing Banks everywhere. Always, she is dressed impeccably, a rare feat for actresses these days. Somehow Banks knows how to make a statement without going over the top. She knows what styles work for her and she always plays up her assets. Banks also knows how to pose with poise, always looking like she's having a blast, which is refreshing to see when so many starlets - *cough* Kristen Stewart *cough* - act like the red carpet is such a burden.

So here's to Banks, who never fails to impress, whether it be in a bright mini, metallic frock, or feathered gown. A lesson to us all in impeccable styling and taste.

Please Stop, Fashionable Ladies

| comments

Milla Jovovich; Kristen Stewart; Anja Rubik; Jada Pinkett-Smith; Jessie J

See a trend in the images above? The hottest posing trend since Tyra added "Smize" (Smize? Smeyes?) to the dictionary, The Angelina has inspired a string of immitations. It was vaguely amusing when Angelina first did it because everything she does is so overly-dramatic, but ever since Anja Rubik tried her hand at the pose and exposed the most terrifying hip bone ever seen, I've been begging the fashion gods for this terrible trend to STOP!

At Cannes, everyone from stylish Milla Jovovich to America's Scowler Kristen Stewart to even British Niki Minaj Jessie J (Of the bunch, Jessie J certainly looks the best and much more glamorous than usual). Look, ladies, I don't mind if you want to wear a slit and show off how well you shaved your legs this morning, but when I have hard proof that you aren't wearing any underwear beneath your gown (I'm looking at you, Rubik!) it's time to stop poppin' the leg and retire the now-infamous Angelina. It had a good run, but please, for the love of all that is fashionable, STOP POSING.

Money, notoriety and rivieras

Of all the film festivals, Cannes is considered the creme de la creme. Black tie on the French Mediterranean- there cannot be anything quite like it. Only serious stars are welcome at the festival, and they dress in serious gowns.

FREIDA PINTO in Versace
Love that Freida Pinto is never afraid to take a risk. She's got the slit without overdoing it (See Natasha Poly and Anja Rubik channeling Angelina), the yellow is stunning against her skin tone, and the bead work makes it a must-have Cannes gown. Parfait!

BELLA HEATHCOTE in Gucci
I think Bella Heathcote is absolutely adorable so she can almost wear anything and get away with it, but I have to agree with other critics who claim that this dress is just too dark. Also, I know that there's the prestigious Palm D'Or Award, but that is not an invitation to actually wear palm print on your dress.

KARA HAYWARD in Louis Vuitton
The young star of the movie I'm most looking forward to, Moonrise Kingdom, wore a butter yellow Louis Vuitton dress with ultra-cool ruffles and a hairdo straight of of the runway show. I think she looks fresh and fun for a young star, and this dress gets me excited to see what else Kara will be wearing when promoting her new movie.

FAN BINGBING in Christopher Bu
Fan Bingbing is without a doubt this year's best dressed at Cannes. Everything she wears is stunning. I adored this dress in all its whimsicality, but what I didn't dig was the hair. She should have either pulled it all back or worn it all down.

DIANE KRUGER in Giambattista Vallli
Stunning. But of course, it's Diane Kruger, so were we really expecting anything less? The color, the cut, the gauziness. And when she turns she get get all Dracula-dramatic on us. I love it.

LANA DEL REY in Alberta Ferretti
I'm a huge Lana fan, so I was absolutely ecstatic to see her in a flawless dress that so perfectly accentuates why I love her. The vampy neckline and simple side-swept 'do left me in awe. Lana's been very trendy lately so I've been worrying that she would get caught up in the "Let's Try to Out-Weird One Another" competition of Gaga, Nicki, and Katy. Also, weird observation: I find it funny that she was invited to the Moonrise Kingdom premier because Lana totally reminds me of a grown-up Kara Hayward.

FREIDA PINTO in Salvatore Ferragamo
Because Cannes is as much about the yacht parties as it is couture ballgowns, Freida picked the best Ferragamo ensemble she could. Blue and white nautical stripes and a halter top. Also, she managed to make the summer trend of belly-bearing look classy by keeping her skirt hem longer.

DIANE KRUGER in Versus
Only Diane Kruger could wear such a risky dress with such ease. The dress is gorgeous, the shoes go well, her hair and makeup is simple, and she looks about ten feet tall. I'd say it's a winning look!

MIA WASIKOWSKA in J. Mendel
Another beauty in burgundy. Mia Wasikouwska is another favorite of mine for her unabashed whimsicality when it comes to fashion. But she also knows how to look completely elegant, which is why I love this dress. The drapery is to die for and the color- nothing beats it.

FAN BINGBING in Elie Saab
There were plenty of dramatic trains at Cannes -see Naomi Watts and Eva Longoria- but they seemed to be excessive additions to dresses only for the effect. Fan, the Queen of Cannes Style, donned an Elie Saab dress that would not have been the same without the gauzy train. Completely elegant and, even with the train, it appears to not be all that over-the-top.

What was your favorite Cannes red carpet look?
