Full Circle

By now it is blatantly obvious that I am a lover of all things girly and poofy and prom-like. For several seasons now I have felt out of place with my particular tastes amongst all the sporty minimalists and edgy daredevils out there. I've never been one to say no to embellishment or petticoats, and so I've felt a sense of sadness each year as Celine and Alexander Wang -and I adore them, I do, they are so stylish, just not for me- continued to reign supreme among editors and buyers.

But alas, with the resort collections out and a new spring season just around the river bend, there have been flashes of hope! That my favorite fairy princess gowns and ballet-inspired ensembles are rising in popularity again. The little girl in me is brimming with joyful anxiousness as we see what spring 2012 will bring, but for now, there is evidence that I will not be so "off" with my fashions (in terms of going with the current crazes of the fashion world, although really, who wants to simply be a trend follower?) soon enough!

Top: Lela Rose, Marc Jacobs, Marchesa. Bottom: Richard Nicoll, Moschino, Marc Jacobs
The fifties are in full swing with huge full circle skirts and layers upon layers of tulle and taffeta. Skirts are also back to more modest lengths, but have great versatility and the ability to look casual (Lela Rose), playful (Richard Nicoll), and even sultry (Moschino). These skirts are not just for Disney princesses and fifties prom queens any more!

^See PROM (the movie) it will be the best decision of your life

So now that my pesky AP chemistry exam is out of the way I am free to focus on the important things in life- like PROM! So our school had its prom this past Saturday and it was so much fun! It did not live up to the expectations Disney had left me with the night before, but regardless it was a good time and so fun to see everyone get dressed up and excited over it. For one night everyone was dressed to the nines, which was a refreshing change from the sweatpants and T-shirts most people at my school usually wear.

A few weeks a go I showed you guys my prom dress but since then I altered it and here's the final result!

I hemmed the dress -taking off ten inches in total!- and adjusted the bodice so it was fitted perfectly to me (an issue I always have with strapless dresses). The result- a cool and modern spin on my fifties prom dress and a dress that was not a hassle to deal with all night.

So of course I went all out getting ready for prom. Well, actually, not as all out as some would think. I got my nails done but my mom helped me with my hair and makeup, not a professional, whereas some girls were getting super elaborate hairdos and fancy makeup. I don't know, prom is a big deal but it isn't that big of a deal, I feel like. Maybe for my senior prom I'll get my hair done, but we shall see.

Anyways, I just curled my hair and gave it some volume. And I wore my new Ray-Bans because they are so sweet.

Then there was the makeup. I'm not usually a big makeup girl but I decided to put some on and spice up my look a bit. I tried to make my eyelashes as visible as possible with a ton of mascara (my eyelashes are basically translucent) and I got this cool eyeshadow pallet (on the left) from the drugstore and so I but purple and orange eyeshadow on and it actually looked cool. Sometimes I feel like me with makeup looks like I'm just trying way too hard, but this time it actually worked out.

And now, for the big event, the grand finale, here's me after all the hair and makeup and general stressing over what to do about that pesky prom...

I'm so happy with how everything turned out. I was nervous about the dress at first because you never know how vintage stuff will work out, but this time the risk was definitely worth it. And the best part is, no one had the same dress as me!

Hooray!

Save the Last Dance for Me

Gosh, I feel so bad, I haven't posted in what feels like forever. School has been a whirlwind lately, and for the most part I've been doing quick fashion updates via my tumblr.

But here I am, back on the blog, so let's get this show on the road:

In less than a month I will finally get to go to that dance we all hold so dear in our teenage hearts: oh yes, prom. Now I know for those of you who have already experienced high school in all its glory, prom is probably an embarrassing distant memory, but I have been brainwashed by the Disney Channel and 80s teen movies into believing prom will be the greatest moment of my young life, so cut me some slack for being excited.

But above the venue, the music, the limo, the after party, and whatever else comes with the prom extravaganza, I am (of course) most excited to find that perfect dress. And while I think I have found that dress (A pink vintage fifties prom dress that fits the definition of a wearable cupcake perfectly) it's always fun to play make-believe and pretend that I'm browsing through Rodarte and Jason Wu gowns for my perfect prom dress.

Some dresses I can only dream of wearing:

Collette Dinnigan Spring 2011
Love the beaded bodice and the petticoat-style skirt

Christian Dior Fall 2011
I think I mentioned this before when reviewing Dior's fall show, but man, this dress is gorgeous

Stella McCartney Fall 2011
I always love a good halter, and the polka dot overlay is stunning

Valentino Fall 2010 Couture
A bubble skirt and a pop of pink are sure to make a statement

Alexander McQueen Fall 2008

If I'm going for ultra-dramatic

Christian Lacroix Spring 2009 Couture

I've always loved Lacroix, and this dress is perfectly girly for me!

Rodarte Fall 2008

I remember seeing this dress at Barney's and falling in love- it's like a fairy dress!
