surfing safari

Though not a surfer myself, I've grown up around the surf culture due to friends and family and have always been fascinated by the oceanic sport. There's something so beautiful and zen-like about surfing, even just watching it from the shore. Tory Burch's blog recently featured these photographs by Thomas and Tiffany Campbell, surf film creators. They are so nostalgic and yet so current at once. The warm corals of Thomas Campbell's studio contrasted against the azures of the sea. So lovely.

Summertime and the livin' is sooo easy. Biking around, European football tournaments, finishing dresses in record timing. Ah, the life is good! Even if you aren't traipsing around, celebrating the beginning of a wonderful summer, look at these images to get you in the oceanic state of mind.

This weekend was my brother's college graduation and it was absolutely beautiful in Santa Monica and Malibu. I finally got to see the Santa Monica Pier and bought an awesome Marc by Marc Jacobs dress for prom! But seriously, major beach traffic aside, I would love to live in Santa Monica one day. Everything there is so lovely.

Friday, I'm In Love: Missoni

| comments

On a day like today you just don't question the fact that it is already March 9th and that spring is soon upon us. It's just so darn nice! Enjoying all this 70 degree weather has got me yearning for summer -because it feels like summer, except for that whole school thing- and naturally I'm looking for the perfect summer dress that I can wear while walking down to the beach over Spring Break. This Missoni dress has all the makings of a perfect beach dress: it's colorful, it's lightweight, and it's a freakin' Missoni! Pair with a wide-brim hat, Olsen-worthy shades, and a stellar bikini, and you're good to go!

Surfer Blood

Whenever my brother comes home I always feel more in touch with the surfer culture of our town. Being a tiny island on the Pacific, it is hard not to appreciate surfing, even if you personally cannot even stand up on a board. I've watched many a surf video over winter break, and I must say it is an incredibly remarkable talent to be able to ride the waves.

The typical surfer is laid back and down-to-earth, and the fashion world has adapted this mantra in its attempt to mimic surfer style, but the runway version is a bit sleeker than the true rip curlers. Think primary colors, body con, and color blocking, like a perfectly slick wetsuit.

Diane Von Furstenberg; Marni; United Bamboo; Versus

The key is to go for a shiny fabric -like leather- in a neutral or pattern and pair it with a bolder accent. Things that remind you of swimsuits and rash guards are perfect to achieve such a look.

Derek Lam; Nanette Lepore; Stella McCartney; Versace

Ready to hit the waves? I've pulled up some gnarly pieces that will have you looking totally cool wherever you go.

We Built This City

On this perfect summer Sunday two of my friends and I went to the U.S. Open Sandcastle Competition in Imperial Beach and it was a perfect way to spend the day! The sand sculptures are really quite impressive, vendors and fun interactive booths lined the streets, and fair-worthy food filled the air with sweet aromas. While my camera is still in the shop (which is why I haven't been uploading any personal style shots, though I promise my style is chic as always) I've been using my Instagram app to take snapshots. The Kate Spade tumblr keeps on uploading instagram pics and I must admit it is a quick and easy way to turn drab photos into cool, vintage-looking shots.

Which Way to the Ocean?

| comments

"Which way to the ocean?"

It's the most common question I get asked by tourists in the summer. Which is funny, because it's like, DUDE! The ocean is right there. Like you can see it from my house. Just keep on walking.

The reason for that seemingly unrelated story is that the March issues are coming out and apparently tourism is the trendy thing right now. Which makes sense. Many of the spring collections featured pieces that looked like they belonged at a tropical hotel or on a cross-country road trip. All those neon and sunny hues, and especially those Prada banana shirts belong at a Hawaiian resort.
